How to Plan a Cinder Block Garage
Concrete block (CMU) masonry garages are strong, fire-safe, and stand up to heavy winds. Proper layout planning and accounting for large openings ( garage portal spans ) is crucial to ensure structural safety.
Plan and estimate blocks, mortar, rebar, grout, and structural concrete footing for standard single, double, and triple car block garages.

| Garage Configuration | Footprint Dimensions | Wall Height | Est. Blocks (10% waste) | Rebar Reinforcement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-Car Garage (Small) | 12' × 20' | 8 ft | ~500 pcs | Vert. every 32" |
| 1-Car Garage (Large) | 14' × 24' | 9 ft | ~635 pcs | Vert. every 32" |
| 2-Car Garage (Standard) | 20' × 20' | 9 ft | ~660 pcs | Vert. every 32" |
| 2-Car Garage (Large) | 24' × 24' | 10 ft | ~745 pcs | Vert. every 32" |
| 3-Car Garage | 24' × 36' | 10 ft | ~1,145 pcs | Vert. every 32" |

Standard double garage sizes are 20'x20' or 24'x24'. Standard single garage sizes are 12'x20' or 14'x24'.
Multiply perimeter by total height. A 24'x24' garage has a 96 ft perimeter; at 9 ft height, this is 864 sq ft.
Standard double garage doors are 16'x7' (112 sq ft). Walk doors are 20.4 sq ft. Deduct all windows and entries.
Divide your net area by 0.89 (standard block surface area) and add 10% for cuts, corners, and drop waste.
Standard garages require vertical rebar every 32 inches, fully grouted rebar cells, and a structural lintel over portals.
A continuous 16" wide × 8" deep concrete perimeter footing is typical. Our tool estimates this concrete volume automatically.
Choosing the correct block thickness affects structural capacity, lateral load resistance, and cost:
8-inch Standard
10-inch CMU
12-inch CMU
| Block Thickness | Garage Application | Load & Strength Profile | Unit Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8-inch Standard | Most standard residential 1-car & 2-car garages up to 9 ft walls | Standard load, wind resistant | 38 lbs |
| 10-inch CMU | Taller garages (10-12 ft walls), commercial workshops | High wind load, high structural strength | 43 lbs |
| 12-inch CMU | Industrial garages, heavy commercial vehicle buildings | Maximum load bearing & lateral strength | 55 lbs |
Building inspections & structural engineering
Garages supporting wood roof trusses or storage lofts must always comply with international structural load building guidelines. Always secure permits before beginning your block masonry project.
