Garage Construction Note

Calculations factor in extra vertical rebar structural jambs on each side of the garage door openings to carry roof wind loads securely.

How to Plan a Cinder Block Garage

Concrete block (CMU) masonry garages are strong, fire-safe, and stand up to heavy winds. Proper layout planning and accounting for large openings ( garage portal spans ) is crucial to ensure structural safety.

Cinder Block Garage Calculator (2026)

Standard double garage sizes are 20'x20' or 24'x24'. Standard single garage sizes are 12'x20' or 14'x24'.

2

Cinder Block Garage Calculator (2026)

Multiply perimeter by total height. A 24'x24' garage has a 96 ft perimeter; at 9 ft height, this is 864 sq ft.

3

Standard double garage doors are 16'x7' (112 sq ft). Walk doors are 20.4 sq ft. Deduct all windows and entries.

Divide your net area by 0.89 (standard block surface area) and add 10% for cuts, corners, and drop waste.

Standard garages require vertical rebar every 32 inches, fully grouted rebar cells, and a structural lintel over portals.

A continuous 16" wide × 8" deep concrete perimeter footing is typical. Our tool estimates this concrete volume automatically.

Structural Tips: Garage CMU Construction

  • Lintel Beams: Heavy concrete lintels (reinforced with structural steel) are required to carry roof truss loads over garage door spans.
  • Reinforced Jambs: The vertical cells immediately flanking both sides of all garage doors must contain continuous vertical rebar and be filled completely with solid grout.
  • Anchor Bolts: Horizontal bond beams are placed at the very top course of block, containing horizontal rebar and roof tie-down anchor bolts.
  • Permits & Soil bearing: Taller walls (over 9 ft) and garages built on expansive soils require structural engineering signoff. Never skip local structural inspections.

Block Thickness Comparison

Choosing the correct block thickness affects structural capacity, lateral load resistance, and cost:

8-inch Standard

Primary Use:Most standard residential 1-car and 2-car garages up to 9 ft wallsLoad Capacity:Standard load, wind resistantWeight:38 lbs

10-inch CMU

Primary Use:Taller garages (10-12 ft walls), commercial workshopsLoad Capacity:High wind load, high structuralWeight:43 lbs

12-inch CMU

Primary Use:Industrial garages, heavy commercial vehicle buildingsLoad Capacity:Maximum structural load capacityWeight:55 lbs

Building inspections & structural engineering

Garages supporting wood roof trusses or storage lofts must always comply with international structural load building guidelines. Always secure permits before beginning your block masonry project.
