Pro Tip

A standard 8x8x16 block actually measures 7 5/8" x 7 5/8" x 15 5/8" to account for 3/8" mortar joints.

How Much Does a Cinder Block Weigh?

The weight of a cinder block depends on its size and the type of concrete used (lightweight vs. heavyweight). Knowing the total weight of your wall is critical for designing footings and determining if your delivery truck can handle the load.

Standard Block Weights (8x8x16)

  • Lightweight Block: 25 to 30 lbs.
  • Medium-weight Block: 30 to 35 lbs.
  • Normal-weight (Heavyweight) Block: 35 to 50 lbs.

Total Wall Weight

"Don't forget the mortar and grout! A fully grouted wall can weigh twice as much as a hollow one. For every 100 blocks, expect roughly 1,000 lbs of mortar alone."
