Estimating the total dead load of a masonry structure is critical to prevent shifting foundations. Use these systematic steps to compute total weights:

Estimating the total dead load of a masonry structure is critical to prevent shifting foundations. Use these systematic steps to compute total weights:
Look up the unit weight of your CMU block choice (Standard heavyweights are 38 lbs; lightweights are 28 lbs).
Multiply the total blocks (with waste) by the dry unit weight. For example, 200 standard heavyweight units equal 7,600 lbs.
Add approximately 5 lbs of dry joint mortar per standard 8" block laid to bond elements together.
Standard 8" blocks have an internal hollow capacity of 0.22 cubic feet. Identify your grouting strategy.
Grout weighs 145 lbs/cu ft. Multiply your filled block counts by 0.22 cu ft and by 145 to find core concrete weight.
Standard block pallets weigh 3,000 lbs. Do not exceed flatbed delivery payload limits of 45,000 lbs.
Masonry Transportation & Delivery
A standard heavyweight 8x8x16 pallet contains 75 blocks and weighs exactly 2,850 lbs dry. Always verify that your delivery truck flatbed is rated for this payload. For commercial sites, coordinate offloading with a forklift or crane boom.
