TMS 602 §3.5 Grout Placement Standard

High-Lift Grouting & Cleanout Calculator

Under TMS 602 §3.5, grout pours exceeding 5 ft 4 in (5'-4") are classified as high-lift grouting, mandating 3"×3" cleanout openings at the base of every grouted cell, maximum 5-ft lift heights, and mechanical reconsolidation.

Calculate low-lift vs high-lift compliance, mandatory base cleanout openings, allowable lift schedules, absorption wait times, and transit-mix grout yardage.

Total horizontal linear run of the grouted masonry wall.

Pour heights > 5'4" trigger high-lift TMS 602 cleanouts.

Dictates grout space width & core cavity cubic volume.

Matches vertical rebar layout specified by engineering.

Recommend 10% for pump line charge, hopper washout, and absorption.

TMS 602-16 / ACI 530.1 Article 3.5 Rules

Low-Lift (≤ 5'4"): Grout can be poured in a single lift without mandatory cleanout openings if cells are clean of excessive mortar fins.

High-Lift (> 5'4"): Building codes mandate cleanout openings (3" × 3" min.) at the base of every vertical grouted cell for debris inspection before closing and pouring. Lift heights cannot exceed 5.0 ft without demonstration.

High-Lift Grouting Workflow: 6 Professional Steps

High-lift grouting allows contractors to build masonry walls to full story height before pumping fluid ASTM C476 core fill. Successfully completing a high-lift pour requires strict adherence to site preparation, cleanout inspection, and vibration intervals:

1

Cut Base Cleanouts

Cut 3"×3" openings at the base course of all grouted cells. Remove face shell pieces neatly to create clean inspectable access ports.

2

Flush Mortar Fins

Before closing cleanouts, flush all protruding mortar fins and construction debris from cells using high-pressure air or a water hose.

3

Seal & Brace Cleanouts

Cover cleanouts with temporary face-shell covers or form plywood braced with horizontal 2x4 walers to withstand fluid hydrostatic pressure.

4

Pour Initial 5-Ft Lift

Pump fluid ASTM C476 grout (8"–11" slump) in an initial lift not exceeding 5.0 feet. Mechanically consolidate with a pencil vibrator.

5

Allow Moisture Absorption

Pause 30 to 60 minutes between lifts. Porous CMU blocks absorb excess water, stiffening the grout and preventing lateral blowout.

6

Reconsolidate Prior Lift

Place the next 5-ft lift. Sink the pencil vibrator 12 to 24 inches into the prior lift to eliminate cold joints and air pockets.

ASTM C476 & TMS 602 Quality Assurance Standards

  • 8-Inch to 11-Inch Slump: Unlike slab concrete (4" slump), masonry grout requires high fluidity to surround horizontal bond beams and vertical rebar ties without honeycombing.
  • Pencil Vibrator Sizing: Large 2-inch slab vibrators will wedge and bridge inside hollow cells. Always use a dedicated 3/4-inch to 1-inch pencil head vibrator for CMU grouting.
  • Fine vs Coarse Grout Aggregate: Use fine grout (ASTM C404 sand) for cells with clear dimensions under 2 inches; coarse grout (3/8" pea gravel) is permitted for larger cores.
  • Form Blowout Prevention: Fresh grout exerts ~140 psf lateral hydrostatic pressure per foot of depth. Neglecting the 30-minute absorption interval can burst cleanout closures and green joints.

High-Lift Grouting & Cleanout FAQ

Verified answers on TMS 602 lift thresholds, cleanout inspection, and pencil vibration.

Under TMS 602 §3.5 / ACI 530.1 Article 3.5, any grout pour height exceeding 5 feet 4 inches (64 inches) is classified as high-lift grouting. This classification legally triggers mandatory cleanout openings at the base of every vertical cell to be grouted and limits lift increments to a maximum of 5.0 feet.
